# SPXI — Semantic Packet for eXchange and Indexing > Pronounced "spexy". A packet format for making a work's identity, provenance and > composition layer legible to a machine that reads it, rather than inferring them. SPXI is a protocol, not a platform. It specifies what a document should carry so that a retrieval or composition layer encountering it can answer three questions without guessing: what is this, who originated it, and what operated on it between origination and here. **JSON-LD ⊂ SPXI ⊄ Schema.** SPXI uses JSON-LD as a transport and extends past what Schema.org can express — origination distinct from composition, provenance that survives transformation, and identity that does not depend on a resolver staying funded.
